The Queensland Country Bank Good for Good Community Grants program helps bring eligible projects to life in communities across the state. From upgrading local facilities to funding eco-friendly initiatives, the grants provide much-needed support to organisations making a real difference.

This year, Charters Towers Civic Club is one of the proud recipients of a community grant, which has helped fund their solar power project.

Charters Towers Civic Club is a community hub and place for its members to gather, celebrate, and socialise. Located in the heart of Charters Towers, the club has provided a welcoming space for countless community activities over the decades.

A Sustainable Future for Charters Towers Civic Club

Electricity costs can be a significant challenge for non-profit organisations like Charters Towers Civic Club. With energy-efficient solar panels, the club can reduce its utility bills and redirect those savings toward improving services and hosting more community events.

Club President Alan Peter Rowe said the $18,150 grant funded a 13.2kW solar installation, steeply cutting the club’s electricity costs.

When we put it to the committee, we all agreed reducing our bill would be good because then we can spend that money on other things that the club needs, plus there’s also the sustainability aspect,” Mr Rowe said.
It’s a big thing because we’re only a small club and we’ve got plenty of other uses for our money other than paying the bills.

Bringing the Community Together

Charters Towers Civic Club is known for its wide variety of activities and events, which cater to people of all ages and interests.

Mr. Rowe said the Charters Towers Civic Club, a long-standing community hub for social gatherings and event catering, is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year and hopes to strengthen its community support.

"We host a barbecue buffet every Friday night, and we do a lot of catering for wakes, birthday parties, weddings, and hopefully with more money we can do more", he said.

Local Manager Susan Murphy visited the Civic Club and is thrilled to be a part of a local Queensland Bank supporting such an impactful project.

Being Member-owned means we have the opportunity to help Members achieve their financial goals and support local communities. This funding will create lasting benefits for the Civic Club and Charters Towers."
