From the heart of Gordonvale, Cairns, a young family’s journey began with Ronald McDonald House Charities North Australia on the 5th of February, 2024. Makayla, a dedicated Disability Support Worker and Hayden, a hardworking Plumber, embarked on this chapter with their two daughters, Miah-Louise and their newest addition, baby Sofia. Their love story spans a decade and with plans for a June wedding hanging in the air, little Sofia, a delightful surprise, added a new dimension to their family dynamic.
Whilst excitement was at the forefront for this family, Makayla faced a tumultuous pregnancy battling Hyperemesis Gravidarum and Gestational Diabetes. At 34 weeks, their lives took an unexpected turn when Makayla went into labour prematurely. Despite efforts to delay her arrival, baby Sofia made her grand entrance to the world via emergency C-section.
Sofia’s fragile state upon delivery demanded immediate attention. With both a left and right Hemothorax, she required specialized treatment unavailable locally, prompting an emergency transfer via the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Townsville University Hospital. Whilst baby Sofia underwent treatment, Makayla (in active recovery herself), and her partner Hayden found solace at Ronald McDonald House, across the road.
The House became their haven, offering more than just accommodation during their time in need. Makayla marveled at the array of amenities, from readily available breast pumps to the pancake machine and communal kitchens. Makayla said that amidst the fear and uncertainty, the House offered a comfortable respite, a place to recharge and find moments of normalcy. Despite the sudden circumstances, Makayla explained that due to the accommodation, the family were still able to adhere to their original wishes of having their other 3y/o daughter, Miah-Louise, be the first to meet baby Sofia. Visiting the House, the spirited toddler found joy in the playground and digital games pad in the playroom, her infectious laughter bringing much loved joy.
“The Volunteers were just amazing. They were always available for a chat, and they made us feel so welcome and at home straight away. To make her feel welcome, they even gave our daughter a plush dog which she named ‘Ollie’-she is absolutely obsessed with it!”
As the days turned into a couple of weeks, baby Sofia’s condition improved and she grew stronger and stronger with each passing moment. On Valentine’s Day, the family bid farewell to Townsville as they prepared to return to Cairns Base Hospital, their hearts overflowing with gratitude for the support they received.
Now, as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their journey, Makayla reflects on the profound impact of their stay.
“My Partner and I have just recently bought a house, so not only was the financial pressure that the charity was able to take off huge, but it also gave us the opportunity to have our daughter come and stay with us which meant the world!” Makayla said. She was even able to reflect on some of the lighter moments with a chuckle, like accidentally locking their key inside the room and having to embark on a rescue mission!
In Makayla’s eyes, Ronald McDonald House is more than just a place to stay- it’s a lifeline, a symbol of resilience and love in the face of adversity.

Truly.” Makayla said. “There are no words to explain how grateful we are to the charity’s donors, supporters, and the local community for keeping the organization going. Without you, we don’t know what we would have done, mentally or physically. Thank you.”
