Keeping Families Close When They Need It Most

When families face health emergencies, staying close to loved ones can make all the difference. For eight-year-old Aria and her family, this was especially true when an unexpected accident turned their world upside down. Aria, who lives in Ingham, suffered a serious arm injury that required her to travel to Townsville University Hospital for surgery. Thankfully, Ronald McDonald House Townsville provided her family with a place to stay and the support they needed during this difficult time.

Providing Family Support in Challenging Times

Aria’s parents, Kirstin and Daniel, along with her younger siblings, Kade (4) and Bodhi (19 months), found solace at Ronald McDonald House. This unique facility allowed the family to be nearby while Aria received the care required for her recovery.
“My partner and our other children stayed at Ronald McDonald House, so they could be close to us and provide Aria and myself with the extra support we needed whilst being quite a distance away from our family and friends,” Kirstin shared.
Staying close to her family became a vital part of Aria’s recovery process. Having her siblings visit frequently turned an otherwise difficult time into a more comforting experience. "Aria loved that she was able to have her siblings visit her for most of her stay, as it obviously isn't the best place to spend your holidays," Kirstin added.

Home Away From Home

Ronald McDonald House isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a sanctuary for families dealing with health challenges. From fully stocked kitchens to play areas for young children, the facilities ease the burden on parents and create an environment where families can bond. For Kirstin and Daniel, these small comforts made a significant impact.
“We are really appreciative of the staff at Ronald McDonald House, as it took quite a load off of my shoulders not having to always worry about feeding the other children during our stay,” Kirstin explained. The family made use of the kitchen, where they could pick up essential food items and prepare quick meals in between hospital visits.

Meanwhile, little Kade and Bodhi enjoyed the thoughtfully designed play areas, which kept them entertained and happy throughout their stay. “There are also plenty of activities to keep them occupied so they didn't go stir crazy,” Kirstin said.

More Than Just a House

For families like Aria’s, Ronald McDonald House is more than just a roof over their heads – it’s a support system that helps them focus on what matters most. While Aria’s older sister McKenzie stayed in Ingham with extended family after visiting her sister in the hospital, Kade and Bodhi’s time at Ronald McDonald House highlighted the value of this resource for families coping with medical challenges.
“We are so lucky to have places like this available when needed,” Kirstin said. The experience underscores the importance of keeping families close during critical medical situations. It provides emotional strength for both the patient and their loved ones.
