The Cape York Boxing club have received a $21,240 Queensland Country Bank Good for Good Community Grant to purchase new equipment to support their expansion to benefit the Weipa community.

Starting out in a makeshift shelter, the club has been running for five years, recently moving into a permanent base and looking to expand their offering to cater to the wider Weipa community.

The grant will in part help provide weightlifting equipment so that the gym can offer these facilities to their current members as well as attract new members. It will also supply promotional items for the club.

Cape York Boxing club director Scott Wallace says they are thrilled to have received the grant to assist in their expansion.

“We have always been open to anyone in the community who wanted to learn or train in boxing, but now we will also be able to offer general fitness equipment and training for our local community,” says Mr Wallace.

“Our motto has always been that nobody should miss out on coaching and fitness, and thanks to the Queensland Country Bank Good for Good Grant, we will hopefully be able to grow even bigger and welcome more new members.”

Queensland Country Bank Weipa Branch Manager, Luke O’Day, says the club’s presence in the Weipa community and the service they provide is priceless.

“We understand how important it is to have facilities like this in Weipa. The fitness services and the coaching and mentoring that Scott and Kristine provide are so important for the community,” says Mr O’Day.

“As a member-owned bank, we are able to reinvest our profits back into the local community that supports us. This means we can not only maintain a branch presence in regional communities like Weipa, but we can also support deserving community groups through sponsorships and grants such as this one.

“Cape York Boxing has come so far in its first five years, and we have no doubt this Good for Good grant funding will help the club to continue to grow and foster a healthy community.”
